Slate has been worked and shaped into a variety of products at Inigo Jones Slate Works since 1861. The site established initially to answer the need for School Writing Slates. Later during the 1980’s a public demand was growing by visitors for a behind the scenes view of the slate Works to learn more about the slate industry and how the Slate crafts were made at Inigo Jones. A Self Guided Tour of the works has been offered ever since.

The Great Slate Tour offers both an educational and fun insight into the slate industry of North Wales.

Commencing with an informative film delving into the Welsh Slate story, experience blasting of the raw material at the mountain to the end use of Slate all around us.

Following the film and guided by a personal audio device, wander through exhibitions of geology and history whilst also partaking in Calligraphy and Letter Cutting activities, shaping your very own Slate Memento.

The tour continues at a leisurely pace through the original workshops, where guests can view the machines and craftsmen in action.

The Great Slate Tour - Self Guided Tour of the Welsh Slate Workshops    Audio Commentary is available in French, German, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese for overseas visitors as well as English and Welsh.

Younger visitors can attempt our Quiz during the tour to win their very own Slate Prize!

Slate Craft Products made on site are available to purchase at the showroom along with other Welsh and Celtic Craft products.
