Hughes, himself not initially of a quarrying background, but of a boat builder and ships joiner in Falmouth, Cornwall. On returning home to North Wales, he began work in the construction of the then, new Dinorwig hydro power station. Later he developed a new career in the Slate Industry of Ffestiniog and Dyffryn Nantlle. Today, semi-retired, he is an underground adventures guide and a member of an Industrial archeology group.
